A Simplified Employee Pension IRA (SEP) is a type of business retirement plan available to business owners and their employees.  SEPs are sometimes referred to as "Super IRAs", because SEPs allow annual contributions to exceed the IRA limits. 


Allows an employer to contribute for employees' retirement, which can be a key factor in attracting and retaining quality employees. 


This plan can be set up by any type of business, including sole proprietorships, partnerships, or corporations.  This plan is especially attractive to self-employed individuals without employees. 

Product Features
  • Contributions - SEPs allow a contribution of the lesser 25 percent of compensation or $55,000 (2018).  Compensation used in determining contributions is limited to $275,000 for 2018.  
  • Tax Advantages - Contributions made to SEP plans are tax deductible and grow tax-deferred. 
  • Eligibility - Business owners can exclude employees from the plan until they have worked for the business three of the immediately preceding five years and are over the age of 21.  
  • Low Cost - SEPs are an inexpensive business retirement plan.  
  • Requires No Special IRS Filing - SEPs do not require the filing of IRS Form 5500.  
  • No Exclusion of Part-Time Employees - Employers cannot exclude part-time employees from SEPs.  
  • Flexible Setup and Funding Deadlines - SEPs must be established and funded by the business' tax filing deadline, including extensions.  SEPs are the only plans that can be set up after year end when you do not already have a plan set up.
